The Municipality of San Miguel is a 4th Class Municipality in the Province of Iloilo. With a generally plain territorial area, it subsists mainly as a farming community. Most of its residents derive their income and revenues from agriculture principally through rice, vegetable and livestock production. A small segment engages in small and medium scale agricultural industries and commercial businesses.
A big boost to rice and vegetable production of various kinds is the presence of the Aganan Irrigation System. Of the total land area of 3,197 hectares, 1,710 are utilized for agriculture, 893 of which are serviced by the said irrigation system.
Due to rapid urbanization and its proximity to the City of Iloilo, the international port, airport, and the Regional Agro-Industrial Center (RAIC) which is in the adjacent Municipality of Pavia. San Miguel is one of the potential growth centers in the Province of Iloilo. Another opportunity for its economic development is the presence of the international airport established at the vicinity of the Municipalities of Cabatuan, Sta. Barbara and San Miguel. This would mean more employment opportunities and infrastructure support programs.
Being a member of the Metro Iloilo-Guimaras Economic Development Council (MIGEDC) and the 2nd Iloilo Integrated Area Development (2nd IAD) Cluster, San Miguel will continue its role as one of the food providers and a source of agriculture based products of the province.
With Comprehensive Land Use Plan (CLUP) as development guide, San Miguel is on its way to a fulfilled dream.
